Nov 08, 2022

ComplyConnect is here! With day one under our belt, we are sharing some of the top takeaways we heard from our industry-leading speakers.

ComplyConnect is here! The inaugural conference has brought together almost 300 industry experts from across the country, all in the name of regulatory compliance education. Today, sessions included our keynote kick-off with Admiral William H. McRaven (USN – Retired), a deep dive into cryptocurrency and a highlight of cybersecurity.

With day one under our belt, we are sharing some of the top takeaways we heard from our industry-leading speakers.

1.What’s happening in D.C.? The short answer – a lot.

In our first panel session, Kirkland & Elis LLP Partner Investment Funds Marian Fowler and Eversheds Sutherland (US) LLP Partner John Walsh dug into the myriad of regulations coming out of D.C., highlighting the role today’s election will play in the coming months for the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) agenda.

While both political parties have their own perspective on the role of the SEC, our panelists noted, whatever the result of the election, the SEC Commission and Chair Gensler, will likely remain under a microscope. Additionally, the panelists highlighted SEC enforcement themes, which included the economic reality, high impact cases and accountability.

2. Your biggest cyber risk? Your people.

In one of our last session of the day, Smarsh Senior Solutions Engineer Gary Tullier and itSynergy CEO Michael Cocanower, covered the heightened cybersecurity risk firms are facing in today’s digital financial landscape. And within moments of the session kicking off, our panelists highlighted one glaring fact – your people are your biggest cybersecurity risk. How can you mitigate that risk? Training.

  • Social engineering awareness training: Make sure to document training events, attendance, completion, etc.
  • Phishing testing: Regularly deploy phishing tests and where there are failures, use it as a teaching moment. Ask yourself and your employees:
    • What could the employee have seen in the email which made them click into it?
    • How could they have prevented becoming a victim?

3. How can you more proactively meet these heightened risks and regulations? Introducing COMPLY.

It was a big day for everyone, not only did we kick off the inaugural ComplyConnect Conference & Expo, but we used this moment to officially announce the launch of the COMPLY™ parent brand for ComplySci, RIA in a Box, NRS and illumis. In a strategic session, COMPLY Chief Product Officer Rob Keller and COMPLY Chief Customer Officer Bill Mahoney discussed the roadmap for the combined organization and how we will continue to help compliance professionals meet the exacting standards of growing industry regulations.

It’s only day one, and  we’ve already walked away with some incredibly valuable insight. Stay tuned to learn more about what comes from day two and three.
