2024 DE&I at COMPLY: Black History Month

Feb 29, 2024

This year, to honor Black History Month, we took the opportunity to learn about the heritage, inspiration and legacy of this community.

At COMPLY, we are deeply committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive environment where everyone feels valued and heard. This commitment extends beyond words and translates into action, particularly during significant months like Black History Month.

Throughout February, we celebrated the rich contributions and experiences of Black artists, authors, and voices. Our goal was to create a space for learning, engagement, and appreciation for the diverse perspectives that shape our world.

Recommended Reads and Podcasts for Black History Month

For the entire month, we curated a weekly list of book and podcast recommendations, specifically highlighting works by Black creators. This carefully chosen selection included:

  • Books:
    • “Between the World and Me” by Ta-Nehisi Coates
    • “Beloved” by Toni Morrison
    • “The Warmth of Other Suns: The Epic Story of America’s Great Migration” by Isabel Wilkerson
    • “Brutal Imagination” by Cornelius Eady
  • Podcasts:
    • “The Humanity Archive with Jermaine Fowler”
    • “Historically Black presented by APM Reports and The Washington Post”
    • “The Black History Buff Podcast”
    • “Noire History”

These recommendations offered employees a diverse range of perspectives to explore, encouraging them to learn about Black history, culture, and experiences from a variety of viewpoints.

Cultivating Conversations During Black History Month

To further encourage engagement and spark meaningful dialogue, we created a dedicated Slack channel, #COMPLYbookclub. This channel provided a platform for employees to share their thoughts and reactions to the recommended books and podcasts, fostering a sense of community and shared learning.

Through these initiatives, COMPLY aimed to celebrate the richness and diversity of Black voices while fostering a space for deeper understanding and appreciation within our company. We believe that continuous learning and engagement are crucial in building a truly inclusive environment where everyone thrives.

We look forward to continuing these efforts throughout the year and beyond, creating opportunities for our team to learn, grow, and celebrate the diverse individuals that make COMPLY a vibrant and inclusive workplace.
